What Fire Genasi Does
Fire Genasi is a bright copper henna hair dye. Henna supplies the red, and cassia and senna lift it toward gold so the finish reads as ginger copper, which is the shade straight henna rarely reaches on its own.
Plant dye is translucent and works with the hair you have. On light blonde, white and gray hair Fire Genasi is vivid copper. On light and medium brown it becomes a warm ginger that flares in sunlight. On dark brown and black hair it deepens the red already in the hair and shows most in direct light.
Who Fire Genasi Is For
Natural redheads whose color has dulled. The most common reason people buy this blend is to put back the copper they were born with. The full article on Fire Genasi for natural-looking ginger hair.
People who found straight henna too dark or too red. The cassia and senna in Fire Genasi keep the color on the ginger side of copper. Customers moving off full-strength henna often blend the two for a few applications and then switch over entirely.
Brown hair that wants to be ginger. Light and medium brown take this blend as a visible warm copper. Dark brown takes it as depth and sunlight.
Graying redheads. Grays take the dye brightest, so they turn red-gold and act as highlights through the rest.
First-time henna users. The blend mixes smooth, applies without dripping and bleeds very little in the shower, which is the part that puts most people off henna.
Along the line, Rusalki is lighter and lands on strawberry blonde, Kitsune is henna alone for fox fire red, and Enyo goes to ruby. Mix Solar Flare in to intensify the red, or Afterglow amla to tone it down.
What to Expect
It starts orange and settles. Henna oxidizes for several days after rinsing. The first day or two runs bright, and by the end of the week it has mellowed into its finished copper.
It is permanent and it darkens with repeat use. Henna will not lift out with conventional color removers. Each application builds on the last, so most long-term customers treat the roots only. This is pure henna, with nothing cut into it. Much of what is sold as henna is compound henna, mixed with metallic salts or PPD, and it reacts badly with anything you put on your hair afterward. How to tell pure henna from compound henna.
Strand test before you commit. The 10g sample is enough to do it properly. Fire Genasi next to Rusalki, Kitsune and Enyo on medium blonde hair, and the crockpot method for full dye release.
Ingredients
Cassia (Senna italica)Sometimes called Cassia Obovata, this plant contains moderate levels of Chrysophanic acid, which both gives a golden dye and has anti-fungal and anti bacterial properties. Chamomile flowers sooth itching on the scalp and smooths the hair cuticle, giving shine, conditioning, and, to very pale hair, weak golden tones. I’ve been using this henna for over three years now and it never disappoints! I read Melissa’s ebook (which I highly recommend) before taking the plunge, and I’d never go back to commercial color now. It took a few tries before nailing the right shade down, but Melissa was always extremely helpful when it came to trouble shooting.
Pictured here is a 50/50 blend of the Fire Genasi and the Kitsune Firefox. I usually make a tisane using the Sunlit Meadow herbal tea and use that for my added liquid, but I have used water and a little apple cider vinegar with success, too. I leave it on for three hours, along with my eyebrows (I tried many different methods for keeping my brows covered and moist, from using cling wrap to squares of ziploc bag taped down, and finally decided to use packing tape. Works like a charm, haha, and I’ve had no allergic reactions.)
For reference, my natural color is a light sandy blonde (as shown in the first picture) and my complexion is fair with both pink and yellow undertones. I tried to get a few pics in different lighting to show some color variation, I hope it helps!

Wonderful color and very thorough instructions for a first-time hair coloring, it worked like magic! My natural hair was exactly the shade of the third example in the picture (very, very light brown). My hair was pretty “orange” right after, but the color deepened and mellowed out within a week to a very flattering red that was still surprisingly light. There are probably ways to inhibit the oxidation process if you’re going for that brighter orange color, but I LOVE the tone I got by just following the instructions and leaving it alone! I have plenty left over, but I’ll definitely be buying another bag to stock up and keep my roots looking nice and ginger. To give an idea of the “mellowing out,” I took 2 pics in similar lighting. The first one is the day after, and the second is 3 ish weeks after. Only a subtle change, but it looks much nicer now! Give the fire genasi henna a go, and just trust the process! (Ps, my brows turned out great too once the stain on my skin disappeared over a few days).

Fabulous!!! I only did one application and added about 25g of solar flare. I have been using the wonderful Fire Genasi for the last 5 years or more and still love it. The vibrant, rich coppery red colour on my faded, red mouse, now greying hair looks completely natural. I love the way my scattered grey hairs turn to a sparkling red gold, acting as pretty highlights and adding dimension, while the rest turns to a lovely blend of deeper copper and auburn shades. It is in fact almost indistinguishable from the natural red hair of my youth. I have come to rely on it and use if regularly so no one, including myself, ever sees the drab grey mouse my natural colour would now be. Everyone thinks my hair is still as bright and rich in colour as it was as a girl! So I just love it for giving me this extended youthfulness. But if that were not enough, my hair has improved in condition out if all recognition. I used to struggle to grow my hair beyond shoulder length and it was dry, thin, and frazzled with many split ends. Since using Fire Genasi regularly my hair has gradually become thicker, stronger, much less dry, and best of all I can grow it as long as I want to -it’s down to the small of my back now and would grow to my waste if I didn’t trim it. As it has much more body and shine to it now, I find it also retains its natural wavy curliness far better. It’s also far less flyaway and inclined to slump or frizz on windy or humid days. I import it all the way to Scotland, as I’ve never found any better henna blend. It is never lumpy, is always the same reliable shade, never drips or stains my face and is far easier to apply than any of the toxic synthetic colours I experimented with in my foolish pre Henna days. And if all that wasn’t enough, Melissa is the most delightful and helpful advisor when it comes to choosing and using henna colours and getting the application process perfect. When I started out with it she took time to send me long and detailed answers to my many newbie questions. Her advice helped enormously and gave me the confidence I needed to experiment and find the best products for my hair. So I highly recommend Nightblooming, Melissa and all her lovely natural products, but particularly the brilliant, game changer for me, Fire Genasi! . I’ve tried many of her other lovely products and have always been delighted. So if you’re sitting on the fence, wondering if you should take the plunge into a new you, then go for it. I have really enjoyed your product and I would say that the results of my four hours curing (and full recipe below) turned out beautiful! I loved the really bold orangey tones! (I was scared it would make my old highlights too red, but it turned out great!)
NightBlooming Fire Genasi Blend — Full Head Henna Recipe
Amount
– 100 g for full head application (The whole package)
Mix
– Add hot water that is not boiling
– Mix to pancake batter consistency
Cure
– Let cure for 4 hours
– Keep at about 100°F
Application
– Apply to full head
– Leave on for 2 hours
Notes
– Color result: glowing copper-red
– Blended beautifully through old highlights and roots
– Hair felt healthier and less straw-like afterward
